For those who are not fond of wearing glasses or using contact lenses to compensate for their impaired vision, there are several surgical procedures available to correct your vision permanently. A very common procedure is LASIK (Laser-Assisted in situ Keratomileusis), which involves reshaping the cornea. However, not everybody will be able to choose this option. For instance, having dry eyes or immune disorders will render you unsuitable for LASIK. However, as already mentioned, other options exist. One of them is refractive lens implant surgery.
What is Refractive Lens Implant Surgery?
Refractive lens implant surgery is a procedure that helps to improve vision and is normally recommended for those who cannot undergo LASIK. It uses methods similar to cataract surgery, as a lens is implanted in your eyes. There are different types of lenses that can be used:
ReSTOR Intraocular Lenses: Most patients who get this type of lens implant will no longer require contact lenses or spectacles. Intraocular lenses (IOLs) have usually been used to assist patients recovering from cataract surgery. The ReSTOR lenses are an improvement of ordinary IOLs as they are multifocal lenses, i.e., they provide for a wide range of focal distances through 12 “step heights.” It also has a trait called apodization, which ensures proper distribution of light in different lighting situations. The lens replace your natural eye lens and it is suited for patients over the age of 55 years who are unsuited for LASIK.
Phakic Intraocular Lenses: This is generally recommended for those unable to undergo LASIK and are below the age of 50 years. The lens is placed in the chamber between your iris and your natural eye lens (which is left in place). This helps you to focus well and to accommodate better (i.e., shift your focus from near to far and vice-versa easily). This implant procedure is reversible.
The procedure is carried out under local anesthesia and may take between 15 and 30 minutes. Patients can resume regular activities just a day later.
