A large percentage of the men and women who visit our Winchester LASIK and Cataract Center do so to obtain assistance with vision-diminishing problems. We are also pleased to offer a few cosmetic services, as well. Blepharoplasty is one of them, and it is one worth talking about.
In recent years, blepharoplasty, or cosmetic eyelid surgery, has increased by leaps and bounds. Some cosmetic surgeons are even beginning to note the value of eyelid rejuvenation as an alternative to a full facelift. This type of praise means there is something special about blepharoplasty, and reasons to consider this procedure for more attractive, more vibrant eyes.
What is Blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty focuses on the upper and lower eyelids to remove skin that has become severely loose and saggy. When this happens on the lower eyelids, puffiness may become a persistent concern. Lower eyelid bags present the illusion of poor health or a poor night’s sleep. This sagging makes a person appear older, sometimes by several years. Upper eyelid looseness can overpower the natural crease of the eye, moving it all the way to the upper lash line. In some cases, we have seen the skin of the upper eyelid sag down over the eye, impeding the field of vision. The precision removal and tightening of this tissue bring more liveliness to the eyes, recreating a more youthful appearance.
Not so Fast . . .
Clearly, blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that gets results with minimal recovery time, or it would not be one of the leading cosmetic procedures each year. But should every person concerned with aging eyes jump on the blepharoplasty bandwagon? Maybe not.
In many situations, the concerns that are eliminated with blepharoplasty may also be reduced with injectable solutions (we do not perform this treatment in our office). The primary reason why a patient may choose to undergo surgical eyelid rejuvenation versus non-surgical anti-aging treatments is that they want their problem gone, not disguised. Also, blepharoplasty is a procedure that achieves lasting results. A follow-up surgery may never be needed, or it may not be needed for many years. This is not only cost-effective but enormously convenient for individuals who do not want repeat injections every year.
