We’re Answering Your LipiFLow Questions

istock 144227897 1 People with dry eyes endure some pretty uncomfortable symptoms. When they continue for more than a few minutes or do not improve as desired to over-the-counter remedies or rest, dry eye symptoms can be a nuisance. According to studies, nearly 30 million Americans live with this common eye problem. For some, the issue is too much computer use. This usually decreases with rest and lubricating eye drops. Ongoing or frequent symptoms may originate with the meibomian glands in the eyelids. These glands are involved in producing the vital ingredients to a healthy tear film. Poor production, referred to as Meibomian Gland Dysfunction, can result in persistent symptoms like:

  • A burning sensation
  • Itching
  • A foreign body sensation
  • A gritty sensation
  • Light sensitivity
  • Sharp eye pain
  • Intolerance for contacts

We are proud to offer LipiFlow as a treatment for Meibomian Gland Dysfunction and the dry eye symptoms caused by this condition. The treatment unblocks the obstruction that prevents the gland from producing the appropriate ratio of water, oil, and mucus.

What is it Like to Get LipiFlow?

The brief procedure is performed using a small, lightweight applicator that delivers gentle massage and controlled heat to the eyelid. The applicator is designed to prevent contact with the surface of the eye. In addition to keeping the applicator itself away from the cornea, the device also keeps heat and massage centered on the eyelid, not the eyeball. LipiFlow may feel slightly odd but it is not painful.

When will I see results from LipiFlow?

Every situation is unique. Some patients begin to feel more comfortable within a few days of their treatment. Generally, we expect the tear film to return to normal over 6 to 8 weeks.

What is LipiFlow Recovery Like?

Patients do not need to schedule downtime after their LipiFlow treatment. Recovery occurs quickly without complicated aftercare. Patients can expect to return to their normal activities, including wearing makeup and contact lenses, immediately after their appointment. The ophthalmologist may recommend using lubricating eye drops for a few days.

How Long Will Results Last?

Factors such as lifestyle and general health influence how long meibomian function remains normal. On average, we see results last approximately two years. The treatment can be repeated periodically to extend its beneficial effects.
