As we age, our eyes naturally begin to change and lose their ability to focus, causing blurry vision, eye fatigue and headaches when viewing objects at a close distance. With new advances in intraocular lenses, patients with presbyopia are now able to enjoy full vision correction through a simple procedure that replaces the eye's natural lens with a "Smart Lens" implant.
Before the development of "Smart Lens" implants, patients with presbyopia were only able to choose between bifocals, bifocal contact lenses or laser vision correction with monovision, which corrected one eye for distance vision and the other for near vision.
"Smart Lens" implants combine the benefits of cataract and refractive surgery, allowing patients to replace a cloudy natural lens and correct full vision through one simple procedure. Patients who choose to have "Smart Lens" implants solely for vision correction also have the added benefit of preventing cataracts from developing in the future, as the eye's natural lens is replaced during this procedure.
There are several different types of lenses used as "Smart Lens" implants for patients seeking total vision correction and/or cataract replacement. Some of these lenses include the Alcon Acrysof® ReSTOR®, AMO ReZoomâ„¢, and the Bausch & Lomb Crystalens® implants. At the time of your visit, Dr. Stefano will recommend which type of Smart Lens is most appropriate for your eyes. These advanced lenses use the natural focusing ability of the eye to accommodate vision at a full range of distances and in all lighting conditions.

These lenses are implanted through a safe procedure similar to the one performed on millions of cataract patients each year. During this procedure, the natural lens is removed and the "Smart Lens" is inserted through the same incision. An additional procedure may be performed for patients with astigmatism to help them achieve complete vision correction. The risks and complications of this procedure are comparable to those of cataract surgery. This procedure is considered safe for most patients as long as their eyes are in good overall health.
