For more than two decades, Dr. John A. Stefano has been known by his patients and colleagues for offering quality eye care throughout Northern Shenandoah Valley. Since 1979 he has established himself as a skilled eye surgeon, performing over 1200 major surgical cases each year. In 1986, Dr. Stefano was the first surgeon in his area to perform RK (radial keratotomy) to correct nearsightedness and astigmatism. Ten years later, when the FDA first approved the use of the excimer laser to correct visual problems using the technique known as PRK, Dr. Stefano underwent training to learn the procedure.

He soon became part of the first group of doctors in the country to receive certification to perform laser vision correction, and also became the first eye surgeon in the Winchester area to perform this surgery.

State-of-the-Art Lasik

The technology for laser vision correction advanced again in 1997, and Dr. Stefano then received further certification to correct vision by performing LASIK with the VISX excimer laser. As a pioneer in the adoption of new vision correction technology, Dr. Stefano was in the first group of ophthalmologists in the USA to be approved to implant the ReStor® Lens in April 2005. ReStor® Lens is a diffractive intraocular lens, restoring natural distance and near vision to patients with cataracts. Dr. Stefano offers the most advanced type of surgical vision correction available to his patients, having performed over 8,000 refractive surgical procedures surgeries and over 13,000 cataract procedures.

“I had refractory surgery done on both eyes after wearing contacts and glasses for more than 30 years. The care was great, the procedure fantastic, and I am thrilled to have thrown away glasses and those contacts. Thank you to Dr. Stefano and his great staff for such wonderful care!”

Expertise In Cataract Surgery

In addition to refractive surgery, Dr. Stefano's surgical experience also includes clear corneal no-stitch no-patch phaco-emulsification of cataracts with the insertion of foldable lens implants including the ReStor® Lens for enhanced reading vision after cataract surgery and the AcrySof® Toric for correction of astigmatism associated with cataracts. Dr. Stefano also sees patients in his office for regular eye examinations and has comprehensive advanced testing devices such as the Zeiss Cirrus™ HD-OCT, the Humphrey® Field Analyzer/HFA, the Zeiss IOLmaster, the Konan Cellchek XL, and the Bausch and Lomb ORBSCAN II corneal topography device. These high tech devices allow for advanced testing for macular diseaseglaucoma, and corneal disease.
