John M. Ely, Ph.D., O.D.
Dr. John M. Ely has provided comprehensive eye care for his patients in the northern Shenandoah Valley since 1985. In addition to full-scope therapeutic optometry and comprehensive family vision care, his interests have included the most modern advancements in contact lens designs including the newest developments in scleral contact lenses for keratoconus and ocular surface disease.
Dr. Ely received his undergraduate degree in Biology from Washington and Jefferson College in Pennsylvania.
He then received a Masters and Ph.D. in Immunology from the University of Chicago in the early 1980’s where he performed research concerning the biodynamics of T-cell and B-cell interactions as applied to tissue transplant rejection.
While completing post-doctoral research in the development of monoclonal antibodies for immunomodulation, Dr. Ely attended the Illinois College of Optometry graduating in 1985.
He moved his family to Front Royal to establish his private optometric practice there and in Winchester and has served this area for over thirty years. He retired from his Front Royal practice in 2015 and joined the team at Shenandoah Lasik and Cataract Center since then.
Dr. Ely is a member of the American Optometric Association, the Virginia Optometric Association, and the Blue Ridge Optometric Society.
